After 1 year of daily use as rice cooker and vegetable steamer, still working GREAT

I love this rice cooker and use it everyday for rice, risotto, soups, steaming, etc. I love that only stainless steel is touching my food and not something toxic! The only drawback for me is that it is challenging to cook just one cup of rice which creates a very thin layer on the bottom; manufacturer recommends that 2cups is the minimum amount to cook for this rice cooker to get it right. It is fool-proof on 2 or more cups of rice. Still I give it five stars as I am not aware of any other rice cooker that is as healthy and non-toxic as this one. My favorite rices are Lotus Foods Organic Forbidden Rice, 15-Ounce Bags (Pack of 12) and Lundberg Black Japonica Rice, 16-Ounces (Pack of 12)UPDATE 4/25/11 I have been using this daily for almost a year now for either cooking rice or steaming vegetables and it still works great! I just purchased one as a gift for a friend who appreciates stainless steel cookware from Walmart dot com who has it on clearance for 85 dollars

This stainless steel pot brown rice cooker is OK.

It's hard to find a rice cooker with stainless steel pot, so I gave this a try since it had good reviews. The having stainless steel pot is probably the best thing I could say about it. I found that it cooks brown rice almost twice as long as my old Japanese brand non-stick rice cooker. I was quite disappointed also because it's not one of those leave it and go after you press "cook rice", and where I could leave it there on "warm" for a couple of days without the rice burning at the bottom or hardening. That's not the case with this rice cooker. But I learned to adapt to this cooker. I cook it at least 2 hours before my meal. I cannot leave the cooked rice on warm all day, otherwise it will really stick to the bottom. I turn it off completely and I have to mix the rice after a few minutes to get the slightly toasted bottom to blend with the softer rice in the middle, then it evens out more in texture. I don't need to grease the pot before cooking, as they adviced, and it doesn't really stick as long as I mix it when i turn the cooker off. I refrigerate the rest of the cooled rice and, when needed, I just warm the rice either in the microwave or heat it in a pan, and sometimes saute it with I add a little oil, garlic and salt/seasoning. Despite the extra time and work, I have to consider it's a healthier way to cook rice than in a non-stick aluminum pot. I have not tried cooking other grains/pasta in it, so I cannot comment in those features.

A TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY

Disclaimer: I did not purchase this item through Amazon, as I found it for much less on a different website.Purchased the Aroma NRC-1000 18-cup Rice Cooker and Steamer, aka the NutriWare Whole Grain Gourmet Rice Cooker. It arrived in a timely manner. It is lovely to look at, but is only truly useful as a shiny paperweight. The first three times I tried to use it was as a steamer to steam fresh vegetables. The cooker shut itself off after six minutes every time I started it. I tried varying the amount of water, adjusting the distribution of vegetables, unplugging and restarting the cooker, even a different electrical outlet, but the cooker still turned itself off after six minutes. I called Harvest Essentials to ask if there was a step or reset that I needed to do and was told that if I had a problem with the cooker I needed to contact the manufacturer directly. So I did, and the answer given was just to try more water. Needless to say, that didn't help.Ok, so it wouldn't steam. I'll just stick to rice, right? I tried cooking white rice, brown rice, and farro on three consecutive evenings. Each time I followed the directions from the cooker's manual / recipe book to an absolute "T", and each time the cooker boiled over and erupted sticky cooking liquid all over my kitchen. The result at the end of the cooker's cooking time was a gooey, sticky, overcooked blob, half of which was eternally encrusted to the bottom of the cooking pan.Ok, so it wouldn't cook rice or grains effectively, either. What a waste of money and time. I contacted Harvest Essentials to effect a return, as I had only had the cooker for ten days, and was told it was not returnable according to their policy, which is:"All items must be returned new, unused, and in resalable condition, as they were sent to you in the original manufacturer's packaging (including the box the item was shipped in or a comparable shipping box), with all paperwork, parts and accessories.Used items are not returnable for health and safety reasons, as we have no way of knowing what has been processed through any given item. There is simply no way of cleaning an item to ensure it is 100% free of any previously processed foods, therefore, we simply cannot accept a used item back. With this policy in place, you can always buy with confidence from HarvestEssentials.com, fully knowing that we offer only 100% brand new, factory sealed items."Which means, you can buy from us, but if you actually USE the product you buy from us, you can't return it, EVEN IF IT DOESN'T WORK. My VERY strong recommendation: DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT, AND DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM HARVEST ESSENTIALS!!
