Great Mochi!

If you have the patiences, this mochi maker and cutter is great. To make mochi, you have to let mochi rice soak in water over night and drain water completely. After steaming (about 40 minutes) and pounding which takes about another ten minutes, you have to immediately roll or cut mochi (with rice flour)while it is warm.Pros: Mochi is great and no strained muscles from hacing to pound it the old fashion way. Also no more store visits to find stale or frozen mochi. Cleaning the mochi maker is simple. The Mochi cutter is better than doing it by hand. Best of all, the freshest and best mochi I ever had.Cons: Cleaning the mochi cutter is somewhat a pain. When mochi cools down or runs out, it begins to stick to everything, especially the innards. Although I use rice flour to help prevent the mochi from sticking to everything, it eventually will stick when the flour runs out. Soaking the cutter in VERY hot water will loosen up mochi rice to clean, but wear some gloves to prevent burning.But in all, I'm happy and highly recommend it.

Easy to set up and use. Bought this for my 79 year old mother. She got perfect mochi the first time around and she knows her mochi. As far as I can tell, this was actually made in Japan so QC is probably pretty good.

It's as big as a bread-maker, but more fun

We have so much fun, every time we use this machine.Like another reviewer suggested, we used 2.5 of the little "cups" to 5 cups dry rice. The rice steamed perfectly. One time, we forgot to pour in the water! The machine buzzed right away, and I figured it out, let it cool, and added a little more water than the 2.5 cups, to account for having "toasted" the soaked rice. Smart machine.We just had a little party by inviting some of our friends (some Japanese American, some with kids, some just adventurous.) Kids took turns pushing the buttons as we started and stopped the pounding. The mochi starts to dance, when it is ready!The best part was the free child labor in making the mochi balls. We have found that wet hands keep the mochi from sticking as we separated it into balls, so we set out bowls of water as well as kinako (soy bean powder) for rolling. They had a blast! So yummy, too. So far we've tried making kinako mochi and also daifuku (with some red bean paste we found at a local Japanese shop), and also just our regular heating up the mochi in a skillet and adding soy sauce and sugar afterwards. YUM.Then comes the hard part: where to store it? It's a bit big and heavy. So, maybe I'll loan it out to a friend for a few weeks while we make room in our cabinets.Video of machine in action:[...]And here's what happens if you don't put enough water on your fingers when you try to divide it:[...]
